Silicon metal
Special Ferroalloys
Product information:
Silicon metal (metallic silicon) is an alloy consisting of a high percentage of silicon (its main component, silicon, is at least approximately 98%) along with varying amounts of iron, calcium, and aluminum.
Silicon metal (metallic silicon) is an alloy consisting of a high percentage of silicon (its main component, silicon, is at least approximately 98%) along with varying amounts of iron, calcium, and aluminum. In industry, this material is also known by other names such as industrial silicon and crystalline silicon. Silicon metal is produced by smelting quartz and coke in an electric furnace. Metallic silicon is used instead of ferrosilicon to add large quantities of silicon in the iron and steel industry and as a reducing agent (deoxidizer). Furthermore, silicon is a vital constituent in aluminum alloys, with most cast aluminum alloys containing silicon.
Sizing and Classification:
In industries, silicon metal is utilized in various forms.

Different Types of Silicon Metal
Silicon metal is categorized into various types in industry, each designated by a specific code. The variations in properties across each group stem from differing ratios of constituent elements. To select a specific grade of silicon metal, understanding the properties of each category is essential to choose the most suitable grade for the intended application. Classification is based on the impurity levels of iron, aluminum, and calcium present in the alloy. Below is the classification of silicon metal types:
Industrial Applications of Silicon Metal:
- Silicon metal was first utilized in the production of semiconductor materials, but today its scope of application has expanded from aircraft manufacturing to lubricants and cosmetics.

- The primary application of silicon metal is as an additive for non-ferrous alloys.
In metal smelting industries, silicon metal is utilized as a reducing agent. Adding this material to metals—particularly aluminum—yields high-strength, lightweight alloys used in place of heavy cast iron components in the automotive and aerospace industries.
- As an alloying agent for the production of in-demand silicon electrical steel.
- Silicon metal compounds are indirectly used in the production of lubricants, hydrophobic agents, paints, adhesives, polishes, and cosmetics.
- This material also finds extensive application in motor iron cores, transformer laminations/reinforcement, and critical equipment across the electrical, chemical, and shipbuilding industries, among others.
- Used in the manufacturing of solar cells.
